Flashback Beauty Friday 57: Dior Addict Gloss History

Aloha beauties! I feel a bit strange going back to 'regular' Flashback Beauty Friday posts after 2 months of special Christmas and New Year festive posts. It's probably worth reintroducing this weekly feature to any new readers.  It's basically a nostalgic look back at old makeup, especially limited edition or discontinued pieces and their packaging. I generally love reminiscing and am a massive hoarder, so I've amassed a large collection of beautiful products that I hope spark memories of items or brands you'd forgotten about or fallen out of love with.  It's intended to be fun but a little informative too.  Sometimes it's one item or a whole themed collection or like today, I have packaging evolution over the years. If you missed my final Lunar New Year special post last week, it was the NARS 2021 release.

So, for my post today I gathered together my Dior Addict glosses, which have undergone some packaging updates over the past couple of decades. In Spring 2020 (if I remember correctly), Dior revamped and rereleased this gloss line renaming them Dior Addict 'Stellar' Glosses, of which I have none, so I'm sorry I can't compare those! They have Dior written in a raised metallic pink at one end, which is different from the five variations I'll be sharing today. I did buy several of the Dior Lip Maximizer plumping glosses towards the end of last year and actually they are quite similar in packaging to some of the ones I have today, though they have printed writing in silver on one side, but the raised 'Dior' on the other. However because they are a slightly different product (from the Backstage range), I didn't include them. Anyway, packaging wise, they all come in a cubed tube, not round, with a twist off lid and wand applicator. There's a big...knob (can't think of another way to phrase that) on the top and all have Dior in large raised (clear) lettering across the entire tube. The Dior Addict lipsticks and balms over the years have come in a similar form with the raised branding on the side and this round knob on top. I no longer have the boxes for the old ones and annoyingly the shade names are written on boxes (still today, why do some brands do this?) with shade numbers on both. So unfortunately I'm missing some names in this line up, but do know their numbers.

The one with the entirely gold lid is Dior Addict Plastic Gloss in 694 Wildest Blue. I can't remember if this came before or after the navy lids. Given the sparsity of photos of this style online, I'd be inclined to think it's the oldest variation. The blue and gold lids are; Dior Addict Ultra-Gloss in 203 A Passion For Pearls (silver), 313 A Bite Of Toffee, 343 (no shade name for this one, but there's a 2013 one named 343 Spring Ball, which is not this) and 651 (again no shade name). I reckon these date back to early 00's, about 19, 20 years ago.  All of these contain 6ml and came with slanted sponge wand applicators.

Then we have two with silver lids. It's like a frosted but shiny finish, not transparent like the newer designs. CD was engraved on the top of the knob for the first time and instead of a sponge, the wand had a small brush applicator and again 6ml of gloss. The two I have are called Dior Addict Ultra-Gloss Reflect in 437 Beige Lurex and 317 Linen Beige. I reckon these are more 2009/10 era.

The newest ones I have were reformulated in 2013. The 24 piece line was split into different finishes; Shimmer (high shine and glittery), Pure (bright colour, varying finishes but no sparkles) and Pearly (illuminating with fine mother of pearl particles). The lid is now transparent with a mirrored, high shine silver beneath and still with CD engraved on the end. You'll see they come in a slightly longer tube and there's a bit more gloss in each, with 6.5ml in the regular ones and 6.3ml in my Glow and Pearl options (more on those in a minute).  Again all wands have the small brush applicator.

So next to the Reflect ones in the image below, we have; Dior Addict Gloss in 311 Magic (Shimmer) which was one of 4 shades from their limited edition Mystic Metallics 2013 Autumn collection. 223 Angelique (Pure), 413 Eclipse (Shimmer) and then these were slightly older, before the reformulation; Dior Addict Ultra-Gloss Pearl in 267 Pink Cashmere and Dior Addict Ultra-Gloss Glow in 216 Lace Beige.  The older Pearl and Glow shades you'll maybe notice have slightly different packaging.  The silver part on the actual tube is mirrored silver in the newer formulation, but silver with the transparent layer on these older ones to match the lids.
line of Dior Addict Lip Gloss in various colours and packaging over the years
Dior haven't used Addict Gloss in their limited edition releases for a long time and the main line dwindled with matte and liquid lipstick finishes proving more popular and glossy lips losing favour, until that resurgence in 2020.  However, sold out shades from that release don't appear to be being restocked, so I wonder if it's being phased out again.  Personally, I'm a fan of glossy lips and I really enjoy these ones, so it would be sad to see them go.  I still wear these often, the 2013 ones, not the ancient ones! There's absolutely nothing wrong with them, despite them being nearly 9 years old, which is why I haven't bought any of the newer ones as I have 5 colours I still like and use.  Have you tried any of the Addict glosses over the years?
