Flashback Beauty Friday 13: Sindy Soap

A bit of a special find this week, but first, if you are new to Flashback Beauty Friday, welcome. These posts are a trip down memory lane, looking back at older beauty products and their packaging, especially limited edition pieces, for a little reminisce. Last week, I wrote about the Bourjois Eau De Gloss lipglosses and today, I definitely have my oldest beauty item to show you.

I've long spoken about my love for Sindy dolls and what a large part of my childhood they were and that they were the first thing I ever started 'collecting' (got my badge in the Brownies for it and everything). I found this bar of soap the other day in my room and it made me think, I've always had the collecting 'gene' in me and been afraid to use things that are too pretty, even as a child!

Sindy was first produced by Pedigree in 1963, until Hasbro took over in 1986 and significant changes to the doll face, body and clothes were made. This bar of soap is from the Pedigree era, made by Grosvenor of London. I reckon it's from the early 80's (I'm not any older than that 😉), so I don't think I'll ever have anything older to show you here.

Just the way her name is written is enough to send me into a spiral of nostalgia, I love it. Weirdly the box makes no mention that what's inside is a bar of soap, but amusingly refers to it as a "gentle introduction to make-up". I, nor anyone else I would imagine, would refer to soap as make-up or even anything close to that, but there you go!

The outer box is cardboard with a little window to see the soap (thankfully), which is a little reminiscent of a doll box. Inside is a pink plastic tray with the chunky oval shaped bar nestled in the centre.

On one side you have an image of Sindy striding it out, which was the picture frequently used on a 'tag' for the brand at the time. We've used liquid soap in our house for a long time now, but I remember these bars would have an image on a transparent 'sticker' attached to the bar of soap. It didn't always wear down along with the bar! On the reverse, "Cliro Perfumeries" is engraved into the soap.

The price is still visible, 64p, which I actually thought was quite expensive considering we are probably going back at least 35 years.

I know it's not make-up (despite what the box says), but I couldn't resist such a rare gem for sharing this week and it would more widely class as 'beauty' I suppose.  I was raking through some older eyeshadow palettes today, but my phone ran out, so I'll have to photograph them some other time.  I have tonnes of No7 limited edition ones that I'd forgotten about (don't recall buying that much from them tbh).  The makeup stash organising hasn't been going so well this week.  I've come to a bit of a standstill.  There's a few things I know I have, but can't find and I didn't want to start on another drawer until I knew for sure I'd exhausted all my hide-outs, especially after the disaster that was the blush drawer (I kept finding more and more blushers after sorting the drawer).  I also knackered myself trying to reach my Lancôme glosses and lipsticks (remember Color Fever?), which I had to grab one by one from a box, I couldn't reach.  It involved standing on one leg, hanging onto my wardrobe with one hand, leaning over and trying to flip shiny lipstick cases over a partition in a box using a coat hanger!  If anything, I'm resourceful!  I managed to get them all and I was in heaven, so many faves in there 😍

  1. I completely understand something being too pretty to use. Interesting how it hasn't degraded over the years.
