Flashback Beauty Friday 88: BeneFit Gloss

beneFit gloss and the gloss
A quicker post today after the mammoth Hard Candy Eye Shadow Quartets last week. I had the optician's the other day, my first time out of the street in 2 and a half years and the first time I've been outside since a dentist appointment in January (exciting life I lead eh?) and I wore the HC Moody palette. I've fallen in love with those palettes all over again, so I couldn't resist. The green is so pretty; a soft muted colour but it has this sheen and brightness to it that make it stand out without being garish.

I'm once more heading back to the early Noughties with these lipglosses from BeneFit. Now I have a couple of different ones here that I thought I'd compare. None of them were limited edition releases, part of their main-line, though they don't appear to do any glosses these days.  Is it just me or did they get rid of all the cute stuff they made and kept the boring bits? Maybe it's because I'm not interested in brows and that's what they're known for now. The old Gloss as it was called, was subdued in relation to other BeneFit stock at the time. Simple packaging, that I'd even go as far as calling basic, even the name was stripped back.

I found a few of these older ones in my stash. One named Macaroon, an interesting mauvey-taupe with silver pearl (I feel it's more an intense pearly shimmer than gritty glitter) and another two that have since lost their shade names from the bottom. One is a bronzey pearl and a lighter beige nude with no shimmer. They were housed in a slim plastic cylinder, which I often kept them in as some leaked. You get a glimpse of the old BeneFit humour on the back with helpful instructions which either read "Apply on lips! Duh!!!" or "Shine. Shine. Shine. Shine...for lips!".

Then the gloss was reformulated, repackaged and renamed to The Gloss. The more frosted packaging of old was gone and switched to a glossier clear format. The mirrored silver lids remained the same, but the outer packaging had also changed to a cardboard box rather than that plastic tubing. Shade names could still be found on a sticker on the bottom and I owned Streakin', a warm, nude-pink and Rave Reviews, a sheer red with copper glitter. I'd say both the newer glosses have a sheerer consistency. The thing I really disliked was how small the sponge applicator was on the newer wand. It was small-ish previously, but this one is tiny and requires re-dipping multiple times to coat the lips (not helped by the sheer formula). The new version had slightly less gloss at 5.2g/0.18oz to the old 5.6g/0.20oz.

The Gloss has long been discontinued, likely due to the popularity of liquid lipsticks and matte finishes.  Personally, I'm a gloss girl, even more so these past few years, I really enjoy wearing it.  Swatches below, as always without any light or colour edits to it, on bare skin, swiped several times, especially the new ones with the sheer finish and small applicator!

Do you remember these simple glosses from BeneFit?
