I realised as I sorted through my makeup stash the other day that I have a little obsession with lipliners. Not as off the scale as my lipstick or gloss collection, but I do own a fair few. I rarely wear a lip product without lining first; it helps shape the lips and usually gives the gloss or lipstick something to adhere to and therefore last a little longer. I'm also very fond of using them as a colour themselves, not necessarily alone, but say a dark plum liner with pink lipstick to create a unique mauve shade. I have a couple of expensive ones I bought in the last year that are sitting waiting to be swatched, but I got this super inexpensive one last week and couldn't wait to trial it. It's the Revolution Renaissance Lipliner and costs £2.50! Rare you find something that cheap in the beauty department these days.
It comes boxed (I bought it online anyway), with the shade colour and name visible on the front and end of the box.
I bought Greatest, which is described as a "soft pink". I'd call it a mid-tone pinky brown to be honest. It's definitely deeper than I expected, but pretty accurate to the box colour.
The pencil itself feels quite luxurious. It's a rose-gold shimmer with the lid and end coloured to the shade of the lipliner, which would be handy if you were storing several colours. Obviously I've not had to sharpen it yet, but it is sharpen-able!
When I swatched it, I was immediately struck by how buttery soft it felt and therefore how smoothly it applied. It feels waxier than the really soft MUA one (I swatched here), so it feels like it would be longer lasting. Certainly when it came to removing the swatches, I needed makeup remover as soap and water wasn't doing very much, so I have high hopes for the longevity of this. The colour is perfect with one swipe, there's no need to build and like I say, although it's darker than how I perceived from their description, it is true to the colour of the pencil and box, so that's a good guide if buying instore. It's definitely got a browny tone though doesn't it? Especially in the second photo below (which was taken in front of the window)-I wouldn't call it a straight pink.
As I've just bought it, I can't review how it wears or performs under a lipstick or lipgloss, but I really feel like this would rival much higher end brands and I'm excited to try it properly. I'm sure I have one or two of the matching Renaissance lipsticks, but am not sure which shades, so I'll have to have a rummage and find them. I'm keen to try the Chauffeur pencil next in the hope it's a replacement for my much loved and almost at the end if itself, MAC Test Pattern. If they ever re-release that, I'm buying it in box loads! I'll let you know if I'm ever wearing Greatest...I'm going out this week, but unfortunately to the hygienist, so that means no lip products. Have you tried any of these liners or the matching lippies?
