Flashback Beauty Friday 28: BeneFit Some Kind-A Gorgeous

Something a bit different this week for our trip to beauty products past. If you missed Flashback Beauty Friday last week, it was the very colourful MAC Manish Arora collaboration from 2008 and I think this product today, launched a couple of years prior to that, before being discontinued a while back. It's the BeneFit Some Kind-A Gorgeous foundation faker. I don't think I've shared a foundation here yet, usually because the packaging isn't that interesting or I've thrown it out if it's now discontinued because I've finished it. However, I had a rummage through my old foundation drawer yesterday and found this little gem.

BeneFit can always be relied on for quirky concepts, names and kitsch packaging. This compact is made to look like a vinyl record, which is a smart use of the shape.

Inside is a mirror, a top layer with the product and underneath a space for the sponge it came with.

I can't find a shade name/number on this, but I think I remember it being a "one shade fits all" deal, with lighter and darker versions being added to the line-up later. I wish I could recall what I thought of this and if I used it much. I certainly would never even contemplate buying a one shade foundation these days because there's no way a "universal" (please!) colour would be light enough for me (I should've swatched this to see what it's like). I don't want to turn this post into a massive moan, but I've had concerns about the lack of shade range in face products from BeneFit for years. They very much seem to target a light medium tone and I think there's a serious lack for anyone darker than a light-tan and that's just not good enough in my opinion.  Makeup should be for everyone, not just a few. Their current foundations come in 12 shades...I know brands with double that amount, where I still struggle to match, so they definitely need to try harder. One shade isn't going to suit everyone, it just isn't, so I don't know what they were thinking with this or why I thought I'd buy it/wear it.

I believe it's a cream to powder formula, with coverage akin to a tinted moisturiser, so clearly my skin was good back when I bought this!  They call it a foundation faker, as in it's supposed to feel like you're not wearing makeup, non cakey, but acts like makeup by evening skintone etc.  Sounds dreamy, but I can't remember if it lived up to those claims.  I certainly only ever owned the one and never hit pan, so I maybe didn't like it that much (though I usually prefer liquid foundations, I remember going through a phase with powder compacts).  There's no doubting that packaging is adorable though.  I love the "Side A: My Perfect Match, Side B: Feels So Good", b-sides, those were the days!  Do you remember this foundation thing?
