Irregular Choice Bag Collection
Post does not contain affiliate links or PR gifts.
I don't know what to call these bags, so the title is a bit vague, sorry! This is the next post in my Irregular Choice bag collection series, which has been ongoing since 2019. I haven't published a collective bag post this year, but this one is the biggest yet and I believe is the largest amount I have of one style. I think! I bought my first one, Flounder, in 2016, though the style had already been around a few years prior. I therefore tend to refer to these as the "Flounder bag style", but that's only relative to me I suppose and since The Little Mermaid launch at the end of 2019, when actual Flounder featured on bags, it's maybe a bit confusing to call them that. I suppose their shape is a little reminiscent of a doctors bag, but again with the likes of Doctor Dino, which just relaunched last week and is a different shape to this, it would maybe be confusing. I was going to title it "flap bags" but it sounded rude! They are the B107 if you're into style numbers (don't care for numbers myself). Remember when I first started these posts, I'd said I'd photographed groups of bags together previously, but by the time it came to editing them, they were outdated as I'd added more to my collection? Well these bags, were one of the culprits. Back in March 2019, I photographed all 5 of my collection (eh, oopsy) and the photos you're seeing today are as of October 2020 (I haven't added any since, phew). I can't think of another shape I have more than 12 of, so I reckon this is my biggest collection, but there are other colours out there, don't consider this the complete set.
I remember being surprised by how small this bag was in person, when I first got Flounder. I find the size super convenient though. It has a bit of a strange opening and fastenings; with a hinged, fabric covered frame around the top of the bag and large side gussets, which give it this unique shape. There's a small flap under the short handle (magnetic stud closure) and underneath this, a studded tab on the framework. Due to the hinged frame, the bag opens up quite widely (unlike the house bags for example), so you can easily find things inside. They do all come with longer, adjustable straps which attach to rings either side of the fixed handle. I don't use these straps, so I've only photographed the ones that happened to still be inside the bag. Inside you have a nice wide base with a zipped pocket and pouch either side. These bags have come in a vast array of colours and themes and even in limited edition releases such as Disney and Care Bears or more recently, The Grinch. The gussets tend to be in contrast sequins or furry fabrics, the back of the bags used to be split in two contrasting fabrics with a strip down the middle, but nowadays tend to be plain and there's always a lot of embellishment or embroidery detail on the front. I reach for these bags a lot and I think Flounder is probably my most used IC bag, period. I think because of the black base but multitude of colours in the embroidery it looks good with most of my wardrobe. Some are more 'rigid' than others. For example an empty Monty or Kitty Kommittee will sit perfectly as if it's full, but Flounder or Ride On will flop, it just depends on what they're made of. I've taken photos of the details of every single bag here, so there's literally 100 pictures in this post, so settle in as I run through them all.
I'll begin with Flounder since I've spoken about it so much and it was my first of this style.
It's got such a cheerful front with the kissing fish and starfish embroidery. The little iridescent shells are like sequins, individually sewn on. The gussets are loose sequins over the black base and I absolutely hate the black velveteen/suedette type of material, because it picks up every piece of dust or fibre in the air. I remember getting frustrated with it when photographing it for the first time (unused, completely new out of the packet), because all these bits showed up on the material, which you thankfully don't notice in the flesh,. The back is just plain black and I didn't photograph it because it would look terrible! The flap has an embroidered crab, the bag is edged with a crackled bronze metallic which is also used in the base. Inside is the SS16 green velvet lining. The Zevra Bag in black is one of my more recent ones. I bought the shoes in pink (I reviewed their sizing the other week on The Shoe Girl Diaries), but I bought the bags in both colours because I loved them so much. The front is a faux leather zebra face with cut-out stripes. The centre of the big eyes are jewels and the ears stick up. There's also a really cool feature with the hair above the flap, which stands on end. The flap unusually is plain black fur here, as are the gussets and the back. It's one of the less detailed of this style because of that, but the front is quite intricate. The black fur fabric is so soft, like ridiculously soft. These bags also featured the cute IC heart branding on the back. The base is black, a slightly crackled texture with the purple leopard print velvet lining from AW19. The strap is black with a gold strip down the centre and ric-rac braid on top.And here is Zevra in pink. When I reviewed the shoes, I spoke about how taken I was with this smooth patent finish over the ombre glitter going from green to pink, it's really pretty. Again a plain fur back, gussets and flap, in bright pink this time and the big jewels for eyes. The bag has pink metallic trims, handle and base and a really fun strap combination with turquoise metallic over pink with gold ric-rac braid. I was completely charmed with the Here Kitty Kitty Bag for SS19. It was a hark back to older styles with the split back design and there's so much detailing with applique, embroidery, embellishments and different fabrics. The bag comprises of a pink boucle material and green floral jacquard with gold metallic piping, handle and base. The frame however, is in pale pink metallic with similar coloured loose, matte sequins in the gussets. There's embroidered flowers, ribbon roses and a large kitty applique in the centre, which my sister claims is more dog! I absolutely adore the fluffy feathered arrow through the heart on the flap. Inside you'll find the pink and purple hydrangea print velvet. One of my favourites of this style. Then, I have a few of the Disney releases in this style. Let Dreams Blossom from Mulan was part of the Disney Princesses collections that launched throughout 2019. I was thankful to get this bag on launch day as it sold super quickly. It went on my wishlist as soon as I saw the previews, especially given that the fabric matched with the Blossom Bunny shoes I have from the main IC collection. I appear to have forgotten to photograph the back of this bag, but it's plain of the pink floral material. The bag is edged with gold metallic, same as the base, frame and handle with plain black suedette gussets. The gussets are definitely a bit of a let-down on this bag, they're the plainest of all the bags here and again it's that fabric that easily picks up dust. Given the level of detailing on the front though, I'm inclined to forgive the rather boring sides! There's an iridescent material running along the bottom with embroidered swirls, which is mirrored in the boots from this collection with artificial flowers sewn on. Mulan and Mushu are sadly, printed appliques (always prefer a multi fabric/embroidered version), but the flap is the stunning feature on this. You have this amazing embroidered fan with the large pink tassel hanging down beyond the length of the bag. Again this detail is on the Be True To Who You Are boots and also the matching purse. The metallic linings differed for each Princess in this collection, with Mulan having the rich green.
After Mulan and Snow White, we had Sleeping Beauty and Aladdin (Jasmine in particular) and from that range, I bought the A Whole New World Bag. The prints were a bit of a question mark for me in this, but the rich colour combination, sequins and glitter really got me. Initially this bag was designed with lights in the front, which would've been really cool. The front features a print of Agrabah and Aladdin with a Jasmine print applique over the top. There's some jewel details on Jasmine along with pearls and jewels on the bag. Again I'm not a massive fan of the prints as they can look cheap and a bit plasticky sometimes. The colours in it are stunning though, that beautiful purple, pink, yellow, orange sky over Agrabah which fills the back of the bag. It's unusual for this style to have a "picture" back. Then the sequins flap and gussets, my goodness, I love these colours. That's the same shade of sequins over all those parts and look at how it changes colour (and creates disco light like sparkles in the sun). The gold glitter parts, don't look that impressive here, but in real life it's beautiful. It's the same glitter used on the Evil Queen crown and trims in the Snow White collection. The purple glitter is chunkier, but again, stunning. Blue metallic frame, gold metallic piping, handle and base with the longer strap picking up both colours, with metallic pink lining inside the bag. This next one is the Who? Moi? Bag from The Muppets collection (probably my favourite Disney release). This one does light up on the front. The pale blue Miss Piggy print has her large applique eyes in glitter, lights in the centre and pearls sewn on throughout. The back features a purple eye print with embroidered "Moi, too much is never enough". The frame and trim is a black short pile fur (the slightly jaggy kind), with longer, softer pink pile for the gussets. The only thing I dislike is the marabou feather trim around the flap, which looks white in comparison to that fur, but is actually a very pale pink. I love the feather detail, just dislike the faded looking colour. The heart shaped flap is really detailed with "Miss Piggy" embroidered in black, purple bead surround and more pearls. The first Disney collection to feature something other than shoes, was Mickey & Friends. The moment I saw this Chip N Dale bag, it was love. There were no CnD heels in this collection, but a pair of flats, completely non-matching. The fabrics used in this bag actually coordinated with some Minnie Mouse shoes, which I happened to have. I actually like the different characters but matching print thing. The main body of the bag is a bright floral on white background with contrasting blue spotty gussets and flap. The base, handle and front frame are mirrored, gold metallic with red material piping and back (overlapping) frame. The main focus is the adorably, cheeky Chip N Dale applique and this is the applique I love to see. multiple pieces and fabrics and embroidery-I know it's more expensive than a print, but for the price of these bags, I think it should be done. There's a large, applique acorn on the flap. I adore this bag, it's definitely one of my favourite bags, not just of this style, but overall. I didn't get the Grinch bag, but I did buy the Care-A-Lot Bag from the Care Bears collection last summer. I was hoping for a bag this shape in the range, but was expecting something more along the lines of Monty (still to come) with the entire bag, fluffy. I like it, but it's not my favourite bag from the CB range. Where do I start with this? There's so much detail, the whole CB collection was a breath of fresh, colourful air last year. I love the furry Care Bears heads in the corners (their plastic heart noses are adorable) and the large stuffed star is a cute touch. The sun and moon details feature in some of my shoes and I like them here too. The sides are pastel sequins, holographic silver on the flipside, which I love. The base is holo silver with textured blue metallic for the frame and a rainbow shine pink handle and piping. The back is entirely printed, it's again a little plasticky looking, but I'm really fond of the furry and metallic heart flap. This next one is a re-release of one of the earliest styles of this bag. I was really happy to see Ride On make a comeback.
Again there's so much detail in this one with the front of the bag split into diagonal sections of deer print and boucle with studded stars and horseshoe, hearts, star and gun applique. The flap is slightly different as it's horseshoe shaped and has fringing attached, with a cactus in the centre. The gussets are brown fur, the back is split in two, the frame and borders between sections are red with metallic blue piping and base (don't seem to have a picture of the base). The next one is a wee rascal. It's my own fault, but I wasn't as crazy about this as Monty, so didn't buy it right away, then it sold out. Everywhere! I did (obviously) eventually get my hands on it, but Kitty Kommittee will forever be my pesky wee rascal. I have a feeling I'll feel the same way about Dunk The Biccy that came out last year. I was always going to get it at some point, but it's gone. The front cat face is made up of bright striped fur with large embroidered features, a heart shaped jewel nose and heart shaped cheeks. Unusually the back and gussets are in the same fabric, the lilac fur that features on so many IC handbags. The base and handle material is a bit weird, it feels a bit rubbery to me, which I don't like. There is a little sparkle to it, which you can see in the light. The pearlised material used in the frame is beautiful though. Here he is, Monty bear. This was another instant love for me and he's without a doubt one of my favourites of this style. The fur fabric is more pastel than Kitty and is in patches, it's soooo soft. I really love the holo snake material used in the base, frame and handle, it's so reflective. The flap is a little tricky to close properly on this one as the bear face is larger than the usual sized flap which sits underneath. Sometimes you miss exactly where the stud is because you can't see for the bear. I just love him though, he's so cute.
It's hard to pick favourites, but I think Monty, Chip n Dale and Here Kitty Kitty would be up there. I haven't said "flap" and "gusset" as many times in my life as I have in this post. Neither conjure up pleasant images do they? Anyway, I hope you enjoyed this post, I don't have another set photographed yet, I need to take them downstairs as I don't have room up here, but I haven't been downstairs this year other than on New Years day. I think I have three, possibly four styles left and the others are all random shapes.

I love these bags. Though I tend to prefer larger bags the shape and detail of these draw me in. I definitely prefer the ones themed around an animal like Zevra, Kitty Komittee and Monty - they work so well!
ReplyDeleteYeah, I still wish the Care Bear one had been more like Monty, as a full bear head rather than just little details.
