MAC Haul & Review: The Disney Cruella Collection

I was really excited to see The Disney Cruella Collection by MAC launch. As I've previously mentioned on the blog, the 2010 MAC Venomous Villains included 4 Disney villains, one being Cruella De Vil from the animated 101 Dalmatians. However, Disney's Cruella is back for 2021 in a collection of her own, to coincide with the new live action film of the same name, starring Emma Stone (out 28th May). The range was quite small, but I picked up a few pieces. I was really tempted with the concept of the eyeshadow palette (magnetic sections that break apart to create smaller palettes), but I wasn't sure I needed it (other than the stunning khaki shimmer shade).
Let's start with the blush compact, so you can properly see the packaging. The boxes were split half and half, black and white with metallic red lettering. Inside they are printed with sketches of jewellery, shoes, lipstick etc in red and black. I love the little details like the lettering and inside, even if it means I get really attached to the boxes and can't throw them away (which is usually the case with MAC tbh).
I admit I have a weakness for MAC compacts, especially shiny ones like this. Honestly, I could sit and play with it in my hand all day. I love the clicky noise they make when shutting and they're just so smooth, it's a really soothing thing to stroke! Again, this has the split black and white design with red lettering. Open it up and the surround of the pan is metallic red, which is a nice contrast against the black and white.
As always there's a mirror inside the lid and this is the Powder Blush Duo in Cruel-La Intentions £28. The bold side, Tickled Punk, is described as a bright pink with Cruel-La Intentions, a neutral. For me, this is a highlighter blush duo rather than two blushers.
I was surprised at how bright the pink side was when swatched, it's got a very strong purple 80's kinda vibe and even the 'highlight' is quite rich in colour, with more of that highlighter sheen to it. Perhaps a little too rich for my very fair skin. However, when I mixed the two shades, okay wow, this is definitely more me. I just couldn't see myself reaching for the individual colours much, they're quite harsh, but together they provide this beautiful glowing, rosy shade. The purple is immediately toned down and the neutral-gold isn't so stark, so I'll definitely be swirling mine together.
Perhaps I'll use it with the 129S Powder Brush £28. I always enjoy when MAC make limited edition big brushes. There's also an eye brush, 217S Blending Brush, but it's always face brushes I'm on the lookout for. This one has a full rounded head (100% synthetic hairs), split in black and white with a glossy black handle with red metallic lettering and ferrule. I'll most likely use this for blush, it can also be used for powder, maybe a bit big for highlighter.
It looks fantastic paired with the compact.
Next we have lips and I mentioned last week on the blog, how disappointed I was that they are all matte. There's two formulas, Matte Lipstick £17.50 or Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolour £19 and 3 shades in each. Do we need 6 mattes in one collection? I think not. Especially as the look created on the MAC website included glossy lips, where they had to apply a clear gloss over one of the products. I don't understand that logic, just have something glossy in the range. Maybe the new movie has very matte looking lips in it, I don't know, but at least they've shown the matte products can be topped with a gloss I suppose. So I bought one of each type. It's my first time using a Retro Matte. I picked it up in Queen of Mean, described as a brownie pinkie neutral.
It's so rich in pigment, one swipe and it looks exactly like it does in the tube. I really like the pointed, tear-drop style sponge applicator as it's precise and that's needed with a strong colour like this.
I felt there was a little hint of purple in the base when swatched, but not enough to turn it taupe. It's maybe slightly more apparent on my lips than it looks in the arm swatch (below). It does obviously dry down a bit more than in the swatch, until it's completely matte. I wore it the other day and was surprised by how comfortable it was. It doesn't dry to the point of almost cracking, like other liquid lipsticks I've tried and I did try putting a gloss on top later and it looked great (didn't settle into lines or go patchy).
As for packaging, the tube part is clear with MAC and Cruella on each side in red. The high shine lid is again split into black and white. I just think this packaging is so neat.
Then the Matte Lipstick, I bought, Sweet-N-Vicious, described by MAC as light pink. It's a warmer, peachy pink (without going orange) rather than a blue based, cool pink. I really like this colour. It's beautiful for Spring and Summer (if that ever happens), it brightens my complexion, which I like and is also really comfortable. For a matte, it's not drying at all and actually feels quite creamy. It's pretty opaque in one swipe to be honest. No shimmer in either of these, just rich creamy colour.
Again the lid is split black and white, high shine with a black base and red metallic details. I didn't think the swatch reflected how this lipstick looked in the bullet (more brown-nude in the case), it's definitely prettier on I think.
I'm really pleased with the bits I bought and I love how different the packaging is to the previous Cruella pieces (you can see the old lipgloss in Flashback Beauty Friday).
